About this service

Family therapy is a form of psychological help aimed at whole families or selected family members. The aim is to improve communication, understand each other's needs, resolve conflicts and strengthen family bonds. The family therapist works with the family system as a whole – helping the family see the patterns of interaction that maintain the difficulties and supporting it in developing new, healthier ways of functioning. Family therapy is particularly helpful in family crises, parenting difficulties, the mental illness of a family member, divorce, bereavement or problems with adjustment. Sessions last 80 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Who should take part in family therapy?▼

We usually invite the family members affected by the problem. Not everyone always has to take part – the therapist adapts who attends to the situation and the goals of therapy.

How is family therapy different from couples therapy?▼

Couples therapy focuses on the relationship between the partners, while family therapy covers a wider system – parents, children and sometimes grandparents.

How long does family therapy take?▼

A session lasts 80 minutes. The whole process is usually 10-20 meetings, depending on the complexity of the problems and the family's goals.

Does the child have to take part in the sessions?▼

It depends on the situation and the child's age. The therapist will assess whether the child's participation is advisable and will adapt the working methods to their age and needs.
